Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) status in NKN

IPv6 is the latest version of Internet Protocol. It is intended to replace IPv4.  v6 uses a 128-bit address, allowing 2^128, or approximately 3.4×1038 addresses, or more than 7.9×1028 times as many as IPv4, which uses 32-bit addresses. IPv4 allows only approximately 4.3 billion addresses.

IPv6 addresses are represented as eight groups of four hexadecimal digits separated by colons, for example 2405:8a00:1000:A:B:200:100:1.

NKN core has been migrated to IPv6 and running the dual-stack in edge network. NKN has got a 2405:8A00::/32 IPv6 block from APNIC (RIR for asia pacific region) and allocating /48 ipv6 address block to its member connected institutes at free of cost.

If you still didn't get your IPv6 block from NKN, ask immediately for the same.

2nd NKN National Workshop

The Second NKN Annual Workshop is being organized at Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore from 17th October to 19th October 2013 jointly by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. Focussing on the theme of Enhancing Research Collaborations through NKN, the workshop is expected to be attended by representatives from all major academic institutions across the country as well as overseas. This workshop would facilitate increased collaborations among researchers from different entities to enable sharing of data and remote access to advanced research facilities.

The first two days of this workshop would be dedicated to various applications on NKN while the third day would focus on NKN Tutorials.

Speed Test @ NKN

National Knowledge Network, a GoI dream project for building quality institutions with requisite research facilities and creating a pool of highly trained professionals.
NKN is a multi-gigabit pan-India network for providing a unified high speed network backbone for all knowledge related institutions in the country.
The NKN comprises of an ultra-high speed CORE (multiples of 10 Gbps), complimented with a distribution layer at appropriate speeds. Participating institutions at the Edge will connect to the National Knowledge Network seamlessly at speeds of 1 Gbps or higher.

Here is some screen shot of speed test done from a Windows Machine of a NKN engineer.
